Entomology of Tenderness

Through my entomology pressure prints, I use stink bugs as symbolic representations of our less favorable traits. Drawing inspiration from the heart-shaped mark on the Western Conifer Seed Bug's thorax, I explore the significance of self-acceptance and embracing all facets of ourselves, including the uneasy ones. By fostering appreciation and empathy for the intricacies of our inner worlds, my project aims to promote a greater sense of understanding and compassion.

To reinforce the theme of compassion, I deliberately selected paper and ink colors. The off-white paper with speckles imparts a more natural and unrefined aesthetic than plain crisp white paper. I opted for warm shades of pink ink in my pressure and type prints to promote a gentle and comforting perspective.

To create the pressure print component of my piece, I die-cut sticker paper with a laser cutter and stacked the cutouts for color variation. I then printed the pressure prints on a Vandercook letterpress, adding a layer of text after the first had dried. This process results in multi-layered designs with rich textures.

Metal Type Setting Process //

With metal type letterpress, individual letters are arranged in a composing stick to form words and sentences. As a dyslexic printer, my ability to read upside down and backwards helps me accurately place the type. This unique perspective not only improves my efficiency but also adds a distinct, handcrafted quality to my work.

The finished piece is an entomology of tenderness, cataloging the parts of us that are difficult but still deserving of love.
